Our Homestead Life

My husband & I operate a 1.5 acre homestead in New England. Currently we have a flock of 50+ chickens, 10 ducks, 2 Norwegian Giant Rabbits, 1 Australian shepherd, 2 cats, & 1 toddler!

We have 1500 sq ft of vegetable/flower gardens, & we sell our eggs & handmade goods to our local community.

We built our chicken coop/run, enclosed garden, duck pond, all from scratch last year, and are constantly keeping busy with new projects inside & outside. To stay within our budget & means we are 100% DIY.

In the near future, our plans are to add more chickens to our flock, as well as guinea fowl, more ducks, & hopefully some goats & sheep. At this current property, that is all that our space would allow for.

Our dream is to own a bigger property here in the US, as well as have an overseas home/farm. Eventually, we would love to own a Christmas Tree farm to leave as a family legacy for our daughter.

What does "Homesteading" Mean?

To me, homesteading is more of a mindset than anything else. It is a decision to keep your family's health & well-being at the forefront by making choices that lead you towards a lifestyle of self-sufficiency & real food.

We do this through growing our own food, raising chickens, & cooking our meals from scratch. Some may disagree, but I think homesteading is about community & not total autonomous living.

I absolutely do not think you need to do EVERYTHING to be considered a homesteader. This is not an all or nothing situation, & I don't want you to ever be discouraged because you do not have acres upon acres, or the ability or funds to do "it all".
